She has always dreamed of riding, and when her grandfather presents her with a saddle that had belonged to her mother, she hops on Joey and rides up the hill. When she doesn't return quickly, her grandfather begins to get worried. Topthorn, meanwhile, breaks away and rund to find Joey. By the time the grandfather reaches Emilie, she is being dragged off of Joey by soldiers, who force the two to surrender their horses.
Joey and Topthorn are taken once again by German soldiers who force the horses to pull heavy equipment and cannons. Eventually, a kind Soldeir takes them away, but Topthorn dies.
